A self portrait of Stanley Kubrick with his daughter, Jack Nicholson and the crew @ the set of The Shining.
A selection of some of the most awesome Behind-the-scenes shots I’ve seen from some famous movies found at aintitcool.com. Back when set designs were huge and hand made, when special effects where mechanic and photographic and film stars were risking their lives on the set.

on the set of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis — the actress inside the Maria robot taking a breather.

The Empire Strikes Back - filming the Crawl.

Rebel Without A Cause — James Dean, Natalie Wood and director Nicholas Ray.

Sesame Street

Requiem for a Dream — Jennifer Connelly strapped into a SnorriCam.

The Gate (1987) — Giant special effect set. © Craig Reardon

The Birds (1961) — Tippi Hedren with Hitchcock.

Rio Bravo — Hawks and Angie Dickinson

set of Alien.

Ghostbusters.

Superman

on the set of Mothra (1961) - special effects director Tsuburaya Eiji

Dr. Strangelove — Sellers & Kubrick.

The French Connection — The Rig set in Gene Hackman's car before one of the best car-chase scenes in movie history.

Tron (1982) — David Warner and Bruce Boxleitner fuck around in costume.

The Howeling.

Nosferatu (1922) — only Max Schreck “lounged” like that.

on the set of Faust.

Godfather — fish-line bullet holes.

Marathon Man — Hoffman & Olivier.

King Kong (1933)

on the spaceship set of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
This is incredible and inspiring.
I just love how you put the 2001 space odyssey pic at the end…. as they say, last but not the least.
Super Collection btw !
That first shot of Kubrick’s daughter is interesting – her short documentary on The Shining is actually quite interesting, as is her optional commentary (on the Shining DVD double disc set).
The shot of The Gate set looks like the top half might be a matte painting or hung miniature? Can’t find any information online about it, but it looks like it could be. Still an impressive in-camera effect though!
This is really amazing.. metropolis, star wars, etc. wow.
What a collection!
Skevos, If you want to know about THE GATE, check out http://www.cinefex.com/backissues/issue30.html. I saw the film many years ago and it made extensive use of forced perspective. Quite ingenious for the time.
It’s like finding the wizard behind the curtain, I enjoyed this inside the box collection. Any more?
Ghostbusters 2 man.
These are really some rare and amazing collection… One hardly gets to know from anywhere how films were produced in those days.. It would be great if you have more!!!!! Good work……
Great job. I’m curious about the Godfather pic. What’s with the fishing line?
Sesame Street one ruined my childhood.
Yeah I was also wondering about the fishing line effect
Those pictures are totally awesome. I didn’t know that it took three people to handle Burt and Ernie. I guess that hand just doesn’t move itself. I loved the final photo you know the Space odyssey. I felt like I was watching from the bottom of where the people are even though I am sitting upright in a hard chair. The Artist is quite talented.
The fishing lines are probably pulled to reveal a bullet shot under it, giving the effect of him being shot on camera
I think that the fishing line is a mechanism for creating the entry wounds of the bullets. Im guessing it is a trigger mechanism so when they are either pulled or triggered it looks as though and entry wound has been created.
Fishing line is attached to a disk, basically a button which is under flesh tone makeup or fake skin & stage blood under the button. On que, the string is yanked and voila, instant bullet hole. Then, if it’s needed, the line is brushed out in post and sound is mixed. Personally I think it’s much better than CG bullet holes and blood. CG is a crutch anymore and makes people on sets lazy.. The whole “we’ll fix it in post” attitude can end up costing producers a lot of money and sometimes takes creativity out of the equation.
Outstanding collection.
Absolutely mesmerizing……
Awesome! Absolutely amazing. Sharing it.
Nice find.
Superb gallery. I especially like the “Marathon Man”, “The Godfather” and “2001:ASO” pics.
Would have loved to see Sir Lawrence turn around and scare the crap out of Hoffman. He looks to be very much “in character”.
I would have just told him, “You bet it’s safe!” the first time he asks.
I just realized how much I miss good movies. Thanks for posting, really amazing. Reminds me of what I used to love about movies. Magical almost.
