That first shot of Kubrick’s daughter is interesting – her short documentary on The Shining is actually quite interesting, as is her optional commentary (on the Shining DVD double disc set).
The shot of The Gate set looks like the top half might be a matte painting or hung miniature? Can’t find any information online about it, but it looks like it could be. Still an impressive in-camera effect though!

Skevos, If you want to know about THE GATE, check out http://www.cinefex.com/backissues/issue30.html. I saw the film many years ago and it made extensive use of forced perspective. Quite ingenious for the time.

Those pictures are totally awesome. I didn’t know that it took three people to handle Burt and Ernie. I guess that hand just doesn’t move itself. I loved the final photo you know the Space odyssey. I felt like I was watching from the bottom of where the people are even though I am sitting upright in a hard chair. The Artist is quite talented.
The fishing lines are probably pulled to reveal a bullet shot under it, giving the effect of him being shot on camera
I think that the fishing line is a mechanism for creating the entry wounds of the bullets. Im guessing it is a trigger mechanism so when they are either pulled or triggered it looks as though and entry wound has been created.
Fishing line is attached to a disk, basically a button which is under flesh tone makeup or fake skin & stage blood under the button. On que, the string is yanked and voila, instant bullet hole. Then, if it’s needed, the line is brushed out in post and sound is mixed. Personally I think it’s much better than CG bullet holes and blood. CG is a crutch anymore and makes people on sets lazy.. The whole “we’ll fix it in post” attitude can end up costing producers a lot of money and sometimes takes creativity out of the equation.

Would have loved to see Sir Lawrence turn around and scare the crap out of Hoffman. He looks to be very much “in character”.
